Alan C. Cote, 71, of Durham and formerly of Jaffrey, NH, died at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital on Tuesday November 28, 2017 after an extended illness.
Alan was born in Peterborough, NH on January 27, 1946, son of the late Anthony and Mary (Desrosiers) Cote. He was a graduate of Conant High School and had attended Auburn Community College and Franklin Pierce University before joining the United States Army and faithfully serving his country during the Vietnam War. He had served with the 173rd Airborne Brigade in Okinawa and in Vietnam had received a Purple Heart.
Alan had life memberships in the DAV, the Military Order of the Purple Heart, the 173rd Airborne Association, the American Legion and VFW, having been a Past Commander, Quartermaster, Trustee and Chaplain of the Jaffrey VFW Memorial Post #5613. Alan had also served on the Board of Directors of the Korea-Vietnam Memorial Park, the Town of Jaffrey’s Cemetery Committee, as well as the Memorial Day and Veterans Day Committee’s. He was an associate member of the National Association of Postmasters of the United States, New Hampshire Chapter.
On November 6, 1994, Alan married Suzanne (Luebker) Bennett Self. They had lived in Jaffrey before moving to Durham in 2009. Earlier, Alan had also lived in Rindge and in Geneva, NY.
Alan had worked for the United States Postal Service as a clerk, postmaster replacement, and postmaster relief until he retired in 2001. In his free time Alan enjoyed all forms of fishing, playing cribbage and gourmet cooking.
In addition to his parents, Alan was preceded in death by his wife Suzanne on January 10, 2014, and by his nephew, Scott Alan Langevin.
He is survived by his daughter Lisa Salotti of Geneva, NY; his 3 step-daughters, Gretchen Vatalaro of Nashua, NH, Erica Thompson of Raymond, NH and Emily MacPherson of Glenmore, PA; his granddaughter Brooklynn Salotti of Geneva, NY; 6 step-grandchildren; his 2 sisters, Jacqueline Langevin and Danielle Bosse, both of Jaffrey; his brother, Anthony Cote and his wife Evie of North Hampton, NH and many nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.
Family and friends are warmly invited to Calling Hours which will be held on Thursday, December 7, 2017 from 10:00 to 11:00am at the Cournoyer Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 33 River Street, (Route 202 South) in Jaffrey, NH.
A Memorial Service with full Military Honors will be held immediately following calling hours at 11:00am in the funeral home chapel. Rev. Wilfred Deschamps, Pastor of Saint Patrick Church in Jaffrey will officiate. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
