Barbara C. Whitney, 85, of Hancock, NH died peacefully on Monday, March 22, 2021 at the Jaffrey Rehabilitation and Nursing Center after a period of failing health.

Barbara was born in Peterborough, NH on July 2, 1935, daughter of the late Ira and Bernice (Cass) Codman. She had been a resident of Peterborough, NH for 48 years before moving to Jaffrey. Barbara and her husband Al lived there for 7 years before moving to Hancock in 2015.

Through the years, Barbara had worked at Yankee Magazine and at the American Guernsey Cattle Club. She always enjoyed bowling and solving word search puzzles, spending time with her family and watching her children and grandchildren grow up. She also enjoyed running the nursery at the Union Congregational Church in Peterborough for many years.

In addition to her parents, Barbara was predeceased by her husband, Alfred L. Whitney; her brother, Harry Codman; her nephew Dan Codman, and by her son-in-law, Thomas Scraggs.

Barbara is survived by her 2 daughters, Debra and her husband Jonathan Coyne of Hancock, and Karen of Jaffrey; her three grandchildren, Dalton, Dylan, and Evan. She also leaves behind her best friend, Jackie Duval, her aunts, Celia Cass and Natalie Cass, and her nephews, Ed, Tom, Mike, Harry, and Robert.

According to Barbara’s wishes, there will be no calling hours or funeral services at this time. She will be buried next to her husband in Upper Pine Hill Cemetery, Sand Hill Road, Peterborough.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to either the Peterborough Fire & Rescue, c/o Chief Ed Walker, 16 Summer St., Peterborough, NH 03458, or to the Hancock Fire Department Rescue, 40 Bennington Road, Hancock, NH 03449.
