Betsey Cummings

Peterborough – Betsey Cummings, 75, of Peterborough, died Tuesday Aug. 11 at Summerhill Assisted Living after a brief illness.

She was born in Concord NH on Nov. 10, 1939, the daughter of Paul C. Jr. and Joanne D. Cummings.

She graduated from Northfield School for Girls in Northfield, Mass., Bradford Junior College and Katherine Gibbs School in Boston.

During World War II she lived in Deerfield NH where she attended a one room school house next to her home. After the war she moved to Peterborough with her family. Upon graduation from Katherine Gibbs she moved to New York City where she was employed by First National City Bank in the international division. There she met her first husband Michael McTighe, also an employee of the bank, they were married in Peterborough in 1965. After their marriage, he was assigned to work in Hong Kong and later was transferred to Tokyo. After Tokyo they moved to the US Territory of Guam where she resided for over 40 years.

Surviving family members include her son Timothy McTighe, his wife Esther and grandchildren Jonah and Maemona of Tangier, Morocco; her brother Joseph and wife Elaine of Hancock; niece Kate Maggs and her children Fletcher and Campbell of Hancock; nephew Peter Cummings and wife Eliza Allen and their children Kingsley and Josephine; nephew Robert Cummings and his wife Hamilton Bennett of Malden, Mass; and nephew Tobyn Cummings of Hancock.

During her youth she enjoyed playing golf and skiing and was a member of the Peterborough High School cheerleading squad. She immensely enjoyed travel and had friends she met scattered around the world going back to the 1950s. She remained an avid doll collector, cat lover and consummate story teller.

A memorial service will be held Aug. 22 at 11 a.m. at the Monadnock Congregational Church, 120 Wilton Road, in Peterborough. A private burial service will be held prior to the service for the immediate family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her name to the Monadnock Humane Society, 101 W. Swanzey Road in Swanzey NH 03446 or Samaritan’s Purse PO Box 3000, Boone NC 28607.
