Charles Waldo Bacon, III

March 10, 1943 — December 10, 2021

Charles Waldo Bacon III was born March 10, 1943 to parents Virginia (Hunt) and Charles W. Bacon Jr., in Leominster, MA. Shortly after, the family relocated to Dublin Road-Jaffrey, NH. Charlie began helping from an early age with chores including making maple syrup at The Ark, a New England inn owned and operated by the Bacon family. He graduated from Conant High School-Jaffrey in 1961 as had his mother and Bacon grandparents. He continued his education at Wentworth Institution in Boston, graduating in 1963 in aircraft mechanics. In November of that year, he drove his 1959 Corvette cross country, joining his brother Dave in Big Bear, CA. That first season he worked at a Snow Summit Ski Resort in Big Bear during the winter and at a lumber company in Running Springs after ski season.

The next season, he worked at Snow Valley Ski Resort in Running Springs, and eventually year-round at that ski resort building chair lifts and grading hillsides with a D-8 Loader. He found he had a natural ability running heavy equipment so he left Snow Valley in 1969 to start his own excavating and paving business, Charles Bacon Excavating, Inc. In 1973, he hired a friend’s son, 11-year-old Danny Wagner, as a helper. Wagner bought the business in 1993 and has continued to run it as Bacon/Wagner Excavating. Charlie was a very well-respected business owner, and a member of the Association of Building Contractors for the mountain area.

Charlie met Jeanne Haugen, a cardiac nurse, in January 1965. They married June 28, 1965. They had four daughters and Jeanne left nursing in 1971 to assist with the business accounting. After he sold the business, Charlie bought a log cabin in Running Springs originally built in 1926 by silent movie actor Reginald Denny. He reconstructed the house, keeping the original foundation.

He also restored many C1 and C2 Corvettes. Restoring classic Corvettes had been his hobby since 1963, and he had restored more than 50 of these ‘American Sports Cars’, and owned over 100 Corvettes during the years. He belonged to the National Corvette Restorers Society, and was well known and respected in the Corvette hobby community.

Charlie is survived by Jeanne his wife of 56 years and three daughters: Michelle Wearing (Mark Ambrose); Denise (John Desens); and Jessica (Mike Porges), and son-in-law Chris Fuller. Daughter Angela preceded him in death in 2019. He leaves 13 grandchildren: Alex Weis (Chelsey), Brice Bacon, Aydin Wearing, Evan Wearing, Joshua Desens (fiancée Viviana Sosa), Adrienne Desens (fiancée Conor Muldowan), Kirsten Pefley (fiancée Steven Taylor), Courtney Pefley (fiancée Travis Console), Emily, Andrew, Lila (Porges), and Candace and Lexie Fuller. Other survivors include four great-grandchildren: Konner Wolfe, Chloe Weis, Cooper Console and Charlie Marie Taylor; also, brothers Dave (Kathy), Jim (Dolly) and sister Patricia (Jack Brideau). Extended family includes numerous cousins, nephews and nieces. His family and his love for our country were his passions.

Charlie left this earthly life December 10, 2021. Burial will be in his hometown of Jaffrey, NH where many of his ancestors are laid to rest.
