Jaffrey, New Hampshire Charlotte Isabelle Duval,89, died February 25,2011at Monadnock Community Hospital after a period of failing health. She was born in Greenfield, Massachusetts on September 28, 1921, daughter of CarlandGladys (Colby)Phillips. Charlottegrew up in Antrim N.H. After graduating high school in Antrim she worked as a secretary for the Guernsey in Peterborough, The Bean Match Factory and Bean and Symonds Box factory in Jaffrey. She married J. August "Tat"Duval in 1940.He died in 2005 after 65 years of marriage. In World War II, her husbanddrove sled dogsserving with the Arctic Search and Rescue.After the war, Charlotteacquired this skill and passion for sled dogs. Together they continued to raise,train and racetheir huskiesfor many years. They were members of the New England Sled DogAssociation as well asThe Siberian Husky Club. Charlotte was undaunted by challenge. Her inspiration led her to master all of her creative endeavors and activities. In the late 50's, she developed an interest in the decorative arts, stenciling tin ware and furniture. She and her husband opened The Towne HouseAntiques in 1960 where they specialized in early American antiques and Charlotte's paintedpieces. She taught herself to repair andrefinish furniture as well aschair seat caning. Over time the shopspecialized in lamp repair withan extensivecollection oflamp shades. Her hand madeshades were greatly sought after. In the late 60's, she became a member of the Historical Society of Early American Decoration. She was on the board of trustees from 1977-1987 and President from 1982-1984. This prestigious society brought her work to the highest level of accomplishment. The designs used inher tray decorating, furniture stenciling, reverse glass painting and theorem painting, now were historically researched and executed. Charlotte's talents included needlework and knitting.She was also anaccomplished and award winningseamstress. In the 1960'sshe helped design the Notre Dame Order ofNuns' habits at the Mother House in Connecticutwhen the traditional long and full habitswere shortened and modernized. Charlotte was an active member of this community. Shewas a member of the Jaffrey Women's Club for 55 years and president in 1963.Charlottedevoted much of her time to the Catholic Church and was one of the first women to become a Minister of the Eucharist. Her creative spirit,beauty,strength and love will be greatly missed. Charlotteis survived by two daughters, Janet Panagoulis,and her husband Steveof Plymouth and Jeanne Duval of Jaffrey,two grand daughters, Alexa Schmid of New DelhiIndia, and Eleni Panagoulis of Warren, NH.,four great grandchildren, Isabella,Sophia,Collin and Autumn.In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her sister, Candace Jenisch and herson, James August Duval in 1989. Memorial contribution may be made to the Good Shepherd Healthcare Center, 20 Plantation Drive, Jaffrey, NH 03452,or to the Jaffrey Civic Center's Elevator Fund, 40 Main St., Jaffrey, NH 03452 Burial will take place in the spring at the family lot in Saint Patrick Cemetery in Jaffrey. There will be no calling hours. A MemorialMass will be held on Monday, March 14th at 11:00 AM at Saint Patrick Church, 89 Main Street, Jaffrey, NH. Rev. William H. Deschamps, pastor, Rev.
