Jaffrey, NH

Colleen H. Selmer, 67, of Jaffrey died Friday, May 29th, 2009 peacefully at home with her family by her side after a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born in Springfield, Vermont on August 11, 1941, daughter of Leonard and Marjorie (Gould) Hakulin. She received her education in Quincy, Massachusetts and was a 1958 graduate of Quincy High School.

Colleen was always a compassionate caregiver. Early in her life, she found comfort in caring for others by volunteering in the Brocton, MA Hospital for nearly a decade of selfless service. She and her family moved to Jaffrey where she worked at The Stand at Silver Ranch, and later at Johnson Abrasives, but returned to healthcare when they moved to Poughkeepsie, NY. Colleen worked with the Visiting Nurses Association for many years both in New York and in the Lake Sunapee, NH area while her family lived there. When they returned to Jaffrey, Colleen worked at the Herb Barn in Jaffrey Center until retiring when she was able to return to her love of volunteering while caring for others at the Monadnock Adult Care Center.

Colleens family and her faith were the mainstays in her life. She loved being an active mother to her sons and is fondly remembered for her years as a Cub Scout leader and Den Mother. Colleen had been a devoted member of the Lutheran Church of the Cross in Hanover, MA for many years, and would later become a charter member for both the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Claremont, NH and the Advent Lutheran Church in Rindge.

Colleen was preceded in death by her father Leonard Hakulin and by her brother Leonard Hakulin, Jr.

She is survived by her mother, of Chester, VT, her husband of 48 years, Kenneth Selmer of Jaffrey; her 3 sons, Stephen and his wife Angela Selmer of Jaffrey, Timothy and his wife Christine Selmer of Hancock, NH, and Eric and his wife Sherry Selmer of West Chesterfield, NH; her 6 grandchildren, Gerene and her husband Eric Ellis of Manchester, NH, Joseph and Alyssa Selmer of York, ME, Laura, Amy and David Selmer, all of Hancock, NH; a sister Koren (Hakulin) Erskin of Chester, VT; and many nieces, nephews, cousins close friends.
