Daniel 'Jim' Ayers

June 4, 1937 — December 20, 2014

Daniel “Jim” Ayers, 77, of Fitzwilliam, NH died peacefully, surrounded by his loving family on December 20, 2014 at Monadnock Community Hospital after a courageous battle with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Jim was born on June 4, 1937 in Melrose, MA, son of the late Rockman and Jeanette (Stone) Ayers. He was a 1955 graduate of Keene High School and went on to serve his country in the United States Navy. After his honorable discharge, Jim married Marjorie Hawkins and began attending New Hampshire Technical Institute studying to be a machinist. Upon graduating, he worked for several local machinists before opening ‘Ayers Machine Shop’ in Fitzwilliam. Jim retired after Marjorie died in 2002 and kept himself busy around his home. He also enjoyed climbing Mount Monadnock weekly until his illness prevented him from hiking.

In addition to his parents, Jim’s sister, Nancy Fawcett also died earlier.

Jim is survived by his two sons, Daniel J. Ayers of Jaffrey and Nate B. Ayers of Jacksonville, Fla.; his sister, Sally Woodford of Peterborough; his longtime friend and companion, Judy Wilson of Marlborough, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.

At Jim’s request, there will be no calling hours or formal funeral services at this time. Burial with full military honors will take place in the spring at Pine Grove Cemetery in Fitzwilliam.

In lieu of flowers, please consider remembering Jim by making a contribution to Fitzwilliam Fire & Ambulance, P.O. Box 725, Fitzwilliam, NH 03447, in recognition of all the help they provided him throughout his illness.
