David J. Collum, 72 of Rindge, died on May 15, 2015 after a period of declining health.
He was born on December 11, 1942 in Boston MA, the son of David and Irene (Smith) Collum. David was a member of the class of 1960 at Marion High School in Framingham, MA and had served our country honorably in the U.S. Air Force.
After his military service, David earned undergraduate degrees from Middlesex Community College and his Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice Cum Laude from Hawthorne College before earning his Master’s Degree in Business Administration from Franklin Pierce University.
He had faithfully served the communities of Natick and Wayland, Massachusetts as a police officer, rising to the rank of Sergeant before moving to Rindge, NH to serve as Chief of Police for the town until he retired in 2001.
After retiring from local law enforcement, David served with the Federal Immigration and Naturalization Service until his health worsened in 2008
Being civic and community minded, David maintained his commitment to service to the Town of Rindge as a former Selectman and as a member of the Chamber of Commerce. David was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Our Lady of Monadnock Council 8544 and a Sir Knight with Saint Patrick Assembly 2129. He was a communicant and active member of Saint Patrick Parish in Jaffrey and a member of P.O.O.R. (Pumpkin Organization of Rindge). He was a member of the Massachusetts National Lancers and continued to be an avid horseman throughout his life.
David was preceded in death by his father on December 12, 1944. He is survived by his mother, Irene Kelley of Natick, MA; his beloved wife of 48 years, Margaret ‘Peggy’ (Devitt) Collum of Rindge, NH; his 3 daughters, Susan and her husband Paul Antonellis of Exeter, NH, Michelle White of Rindge, NH, and Patricia Smith of Jaffrey; his son David J. Collum of Acton, MA; his grandchildren, Kaitlin Collum, David Collum, Catherine Collum, Joseph Antonellis, Benjamin Antonellis, Rebecca Antonellis, Samantha White, Sarah White, Julieann White, Mackenzie White, Taylor White, Hunter White, Jordan Smith, and Jessica Smith; his great-grandchildren; Marshall Jones and Jackson Jones; his sister, Patricia Vorce of Hudson, MA and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
David will be dearly missed by all those who knew him for his kindness, generosity and most importantly his sense of humor.
Friends and family are invited to calling hours on Tuesday, May 19, 2015 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Cournoyer Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 33 River Street, (Route 202) Jaffrey.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, May 20, 2015 at 11:00 AM at Saint Patrick Church, 89 Main Street, Jaffrey. Rev. Msgr. Gerald Belanger will officiate. Burial with full military honors will follow at the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Winchendon.
David’s family respectfully requests no flowers, and would prefer memorial donations made in his name to either the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 11454, Alexandria, VA 22312, or to P.O.O.R. (Pumpkin Organization of Rindge) C/O Carol Donovan, 47 Coot Bay Drive, Rindge, NH 03461 or a charity of their choice.
