Rindge, New Hampshire
DORIS R. GAMBLE, 84, of Rochester, NH and more recently Rindge, NH, passed away peacefully Saturday, March 8th at the Good Shepherd Nursing Home in Jaffrey, NH.
Doris was born on December 3, 1923 in Dorchester, Massachusetts, she was the daughter of the late Carl and Ruth (Myrdeen) Ericson. Doris led a courageous and exemplary life. She raised her son alone and helped support her family at a time when such endeavors were very rare for a woman. She was an extremely talented person who participated in multiple artistic pursuits, all the while working a full time "day job."
In 1964 she married Charles H. Gamble at a farm in Vermont with the farmer and his wife as the only witnesses. She and "Charlie" had an adventurous partnership. They owned and operated the Zermatt Inn in the White Mountains for ten years, ran a Sunday brunch in at the Monadnock Inn in Jaffrey, then packed up all their belongings, their dog "Tips" and their grandson Matthew and headed west, first to Taos, New Mexico and then to Safford, Arizona. While living in Arizona Doris worked at Walmart and was very active in a program that raised money for the Special Olympics. They returned to New Hampshire in 1995 and continued their adventures at a little slower pace.
There wasn't anything that Doris didn't know how to make: she knitted, crocheted, painted, had a ceramics kiln and made her own molds, made books, Christmas ornaments, and the list goes on and on. In more recent years Doris took to making little wire angels and carried a supply with her wherever she went. She would give them to people who were kind to her and tell the story that her mother always said: "A smile costs nothing." Anyone who met her would never forget her.
Doris leaves her son William C. Bailey Rindge, NH, daughter Marilyn (Lynne) Weston of North Hampton, NH and son Bruce W. Gamble of Bethlehem, NH, along with five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was predeceased in 2005 by her husband Charles and in 1989 by her granddaughter Heather.
Donations may be made in Doriss memory to the American Diabetes Association P.O. Box 11454, Alexandria, VA 22312 or to the American Cancer Society Northern New England Region, 2 Commerce Drive, Suite 110, Bedford, NH 03110.
There will be no services at this time. A memorial celebration will be held in the summer.
