Dr. Semon M. Lilienfeld, 91, of Main Street in Jaffrey, died Sunday, March 25, 2012 at his home after a period of failing health. He was born on June 3, 1920 in New York, NY, son of the late Samuel and Carrie Lilienfeld. He had received his education from Columbia University and New York University and had served his country in the US Army Air Corps, Air Transport Command, during World War II. Dr. Lilienfeld married Louise Kadison on December 16, 1945 and together, they bought a small medical practice in West Virginia and chose a small town setting to begin their family in. It was important to Dr. Lilienfeld that he be a physician where one was needed, in a country setting, more than in a city. He loved his small community and enjoyed feeling more connected to the families he was caring for. He enjoyed making house calls and being alerted to emergencies over his CB radio. He never knew what ailment would strike next, but always felt prepared, and he took great pride in the fact that he would often accept chickens and pies for payment of his services. In 1967, Dr. Lilienfeld moved his family to Newton, MA where he served his residency in Psychiatry at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Jamaica Plain. He retired at the age of 75 and moved briefly to Searsport, Maine before moving to Jaffrey, NH where he once again found comfort in a small community. Dr. Lilienfeld was a skilled woodworker and through the years, he and his wife renovated several homes. He was also an avid sailor and enjoyed piloting his sailboat, and later a motorboat, up and down the northeast coast line. Dr. Lilienfeld was preceded in death by his son Gregory on July 7, 1997. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Louise (Kadison) Lilienfeld of Jaffrey, his daughter, Rebecca Lilienfeld of Hollywood, CA; his 2 sons, Jonathan Lilienfeld of Newton, MA and David Lilienfeld of Schenectady, NY, and 2 grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Dr. Lilienfeld’s name to the Monadnock Humane Society, 101 West Swanzey Road, Swanzey, NH 03446, or to the ASPCA, 520 8th Ave, 7th Floor, New York, NY 10018.
