Edith G. Tremblay

Edith G. Tremblay, 97, of Jaffrey, NH and formerly of Hancock, NH, died peacefully on Saturday, May 19, 2012 at the Monadnock Community Hospital in Peterborough, NH after a period of failing health. Born on February 1, 1915 in Medford, MA, Mrs. Tremblay was the daughter of the late Cyrus Seymour and Edith (Philbrick) Gates. She grew up in Andover, MA, graduated from the Andover Public Schools, and moved to Hancock in 1937. She married Arthur A. Tremblay in 1949. They were long-time residents of Hancock and well known as the owners of the Hancock Cash Market which Mr. and Mrs. Tremblay operated together from 1949 to 1971. She was predeceased by her husband on November 20, 1999, and by her son Richard A. Tremblay. A tireless advocate for the education of young children, Mrs. Tremblay volunteered for many years as a reading and phonics aide at Hancock Elementary School. She was also a highly accomplished hand knitter and seamstress who designed custom clothing for herself and her family. Mrs. Tremblay is survived by her two daughters, Mary Elizabeth Berkebile of Bealeton, VA., and Judith A. Barrett of Duxbury, MA; eleven grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and close friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Mrs. Tremblay’s name to the Harris Center for Conservation Education, 83 King’s Highway, Hancock, NH 03449.

There will be no calling hours.

A Graveside Service will be held on Friday May 25, 2012 at 10:00AM at the family lot in Hillside Cemetery, Route 137, Hancock, NH. The Rev. Sarah Robbins-Cole, Associate Rector of All Saints Church in Peterborough, will officiate.
