Esther A.Holman, 96, a lifelong resident of Fitzwilliam, died Monday, January 21, 2019, at her home, surrounded by her loving family, after a period of declining health.
She was born on August 11, 1922 in Fitzwilliam, a daughter of the late John and Amalia (Koski) Hongisto.
Esther’s life story was one filled with dedication, determination, perseverance (SISU) and great strength. She was proud of her Finnish heritage and deeply rooted in all things family; which was one of her greatest gifts. Esther found happiness in the simple things in life. A good cup of black coffee with nisu, working in her flower and vegetable gardens, leisurely car and fire truck rides, a home cooked meal, a good song, a pretty wreath with a bright red bow hung on the door, a neat woodpile, feeding the birds and most of all, spending time with family and friends could all bring a smile to her face and joy to her heart.
For Esther, Christmas embodied all of these things. During this special and favorite time of year, her smiles and joy deepened. We will be reminded of her love for this season by each and every detail. Her carefully preserved harvest from the summer, fresh-baked goods that rolled out of her oven, fragrant balsam scattered on her floor from the homemade wreaths, countless meandering car rides in search of the twinkling lights, the smell of the wood stove on her clothes from the unforgettable heat that warmed her home, bountiful homemade meals eaten with family and friends with holiday music humming in the background to her bottomless coffee pot ready to greet any guest. She was Christmas.
Survivors include her three sons, Richard A. Holman and his wife Sandy, of Fitzwilliam, James W. Holman and his wife Ursula, of Cape Coral, FL. and John E. Holman and his wife Debbie of Fitzwilliam; two daughters, Nancy J. Raitto and her husband Donald of Fitzwilliam and Sheila E. Gregory of Westminster, CA.; 11 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, and 18 great great grandchildren along with nieces, nephews and friends.
