Frederick P. Woodward, 92, lifelong resident of Dublin, NH and Stewart FL passed away in the comfort of his home on June 25, 2024, following a period of declining health.
Frederick, affectionately known by his family and friends as “Woody” was born in Peterborough, NH, on June 2, 1932, a son to the late Frank and Angelina (Rocco) Woodward.
Woody attended Peterborough High School and graduated in the class of 1950 and entered a Pre-med program at Springfield College. He then made the decision to leave college to enlist in the United States Navy. He and his two brothers enlisted in the military together.
Woody was extremely proud of his time spent serving in the United States Navy. He enlisted on October 10, 1951, and served during the Korean War on the USS Donner working the steam turbines as an engine room machinist, having earned the National Defense Ribbon. He returned home following his honorable discharge in 1955. In 2023, the town of Dublin dedicated a memorial placard to veterans of the Korean war, all three Veteran Woodward brothers were in attendance, “Woody”, “Buddy”, and “Cookie” for the dedication ceremony. He was also a member of the American Legion in both Jaffrey and Florida locations for over 50 years.
Woody married the love of his life, Betty (Maynard) on July 6, 1957. Together they raised their family of 4 children in Dublin. They would have celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary this month. He and Betty spent winters as “snow birds” in Florida for the past 34 years at Natalie Estates, a senior living community. He enjoyed a very active social life attending all of the holiday parties and celebrations at the club house, playing cribbage on Tuesday nights with the guys, game night, cocktail hours with neighbors and visiting with the many lifelong friends he had there. He served on the board of directors and other committees there.
Over the years, Woody was involved in the Dublin community. He lived there his entire life with the exception of the 4 years he was in the Navy. He was one of the original founders of the Dublin engine meet, often showcasing his 1936 John Deer model B tractor and antique engines. He was on the Dublin planning board, a member of the fire department from 1948 until 2009 and participated in very first responder class in the state. He was on the rescue squad for many years. He was also a Forest Fire Warden for many years for the town. He began working as a lineman for the Bell Telephone Company at age 26 and stayed with them for the next 36 years, the last 6 as a contract work inspector. He started his own business, “Woody’s Windows” which he ran for 18 years. In his retirement he enjoyed spending time with Betty, taking care of his home and lawns, and spending time in his workshop, he always found something to do. He bought a mini backhoe for his 85th birthday and used it for projects around his home and for friends.
He will be forever remembered by his beloved wife of 67 years, Betty, his four children; daughter Tina Woodward and partner Bruce White, along with her daughter Kristina Hartwell and partner Matt, Sarah Sangermano and her husband Joe and their son Philip, Joanne Jones and her husband Brian and their children, Chad, Edick, Phillip Edick, Stephanie Woofter and her husband Josh, Son, Danny Woodward and his wife Tracy and his children, Myriah White and her husband Charles, Frederick Dominick Woodward and his fiancé Kayla, Daniel James Woodward, Forest Donald Lee Woodward and his wife Carly, and Wendy Angelina Woodward and her fiancé Tommy, a brother Francis “Cookie” Woodward of Georga, 13 great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends. Woody was predeceased by his brother and proud veteran, Robert “Buddy” F. Woodward.
Woody was a kind, gentle and loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. His family was the most important thing in his life. Family time was spent camping at Silver Lake during the summer or at the house on Granite Lake, at engine meets, and the annual drive to Florida during February school vacations, snowmobiling and ice fishing. In later years it was family visits with he and Betty in Florida, and BBQ’s and get-togethers in the summer when he was in Dublin. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren as they were growing up and then as adults and recently playing with his youngest great grandson. He was always there to listen, provide suggestions if you asked for them and give a hug when needed or for no reason at all. He was a genuine handy man and could fix anything and he passed those skills on to his children. He taught his children to be loving, kind, independent and strong. He was the first one to offer help to anyone that needed it. He touched many people’s lives in a loving and positive way and will be greatly missed by everyone that knew him.
