George K. Slyman, Sr., 77, of New Ipswich, NH, died on March 23, 2016 after a long illness.
He was born in Brooklyn, NY in 1939 to Lawrence and Mary (Malone) Slyman, he was one of ten children. He attended Fort Hamilton High School and Brooklyn College before serving with the US Army from 1957 to 1960 in Germany where he met his future wife Hannelore.
His career included being national sales manager for the Loft/Barraccini Candy Company in New York, account manager for Consolidated Freightways in Manchester, NH, and after retiring he served as the town tax collector for New Ipswich.
He had a great capacity for learning languages, having been fluent in German and more recently began studying Italian.
George was a founding member of the Knights of Columbus council 8016 at Sacred Heart church in Greenville, NH. He volunteered at St Vincent DePaul Society for many years, and served on civic boards as well. He enjoyed the company of his family, especially his grandchildren, many friends, singing, playing bocci, tennis, and traveling extensively throughout Europe. Most recently he enjoyed wintering on the west coast of Florida.
He is survived by his wife Hannelore, his son George and his wife Diane, their children Jillian, Joshua and Aaron, his sister Rose of Pennsylvania, his sister Patsy of Maine, his brother Marty of New Jersey, and his brother Paul of Virginia. He will be sorely missed by his family and friends.
Family and friends are invited to calling hours on Wednesday, March 30th from 5:00 to 8:00pm at the Cournoyer Funeral Home, 33 River Street, (Rte. 202) Jaffrey, NH.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Wilfred Deschamps on Thursday, March 31st, at 11:30 AM in Sacred Heart Church, 15 High Street, Greenville, NH.
A private burial service with Military Honors will take place at the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen, NH.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are asked to be made to St. Vincent de Paul Sacred Heart Food Pantry of Greenville New Hampshire. 603-878-0518
