George Walter Haney

George W. “Sarge” Haney, 67, of Jaffrey, died peacefully Tuesday December 18, 2012 at the Good Shepherd Health Care Center in Jaffrey following a long illness. He was born June 25, 1945 in Boston MA, son of William L. and Mabel (James) Haney. George enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1963; was sent to the Dominican Republic in 1965 where he received the Purple Heart for action against the enemy. George volunteered for duty in Vietnam where he was awarded his second Purple Heart in 1966 for wounds received. In 1967 he was honorably discharged from the U.S. Marines and lived in Japan where he met his loving wife Chieko, to whom he has been married for over 44 years. George enlisted in the U.S. Army 1969 and was in the infantry all of his career earning the following awards: Purple Heart with Gold Star, Army Commendation Medal with three oak leaf clusters, Combat Action with Gold Star, NCO Professional Development Ribbon with numeral 3, Overseas Service Ribbon, Vietnam Service Ribbon and Army Service Ribbon. After retiring in 1985 from Fort Benning, Georgia he and Chieko moved to Jaffrey, NH where he attended Franklin Pierce College. George worked at the VFW Post 5613, and at John Humiston Post 11, The American Legion until retiring in 2008. George believed in Service to Veterans and was a life member of the VFW, Life Member of the Disabled American Veterans, a Life Member of the American Legion, and a Life Member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart.

He will be buried with Military Honors at the New Hampshire Veteran’s Cemetery in Boscawen at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Jaffrey/Rindge Memorial Ambulance Fund, Post Office Box 107, Jaffrey NH 03452.

At George’s request, there will be no calling hours.

A Memorial to his life will be held Saturday January 5th at the American Legion Post on Webster Street in Jaffrey from 12:00 to 2:00PM
