George William Somero, otherwise lovingly known as ‘Billy’, ‘Billium’ or ‘William’, age 80, a lifelong resident of New Ipswich, NH died peacefully on Thursday, January 12, 2023 at home surrounded by his loving family. He was born on September 14, 1942, in Worcester, Massachusetts, the eldest son of George and Gertrude (Stinsen) Somero. He attended schools in New Ipswich and graduated from Appleton Academy.
He was known for his quirky antics like using his dad’s tractor as his transportation to travel to and from school.
He worked for many years as the New Ipswich Road Agent where he won the whole town over. He never hesitated to lend a helping hand. He later worked for Park Construction as a mechanic for 27 years until his retirement. He was a master of his trade and everybody’s go-to for mechanical questions.
Billy was loved by all. His peaceful presence was remarkable. He could not be shocked. Billy was always up for an adventure. He didn’t hesitate to travel to new places like Alaska, where he learned to pan for gold, or to Guatemala where he loved to talk to the locals. Even though he didn’t speak any Spanish, that didn’t stop him. As long as he was able to, he could be found with a baby cradled in his arms or was taking someone along to go fishing. He didn’t leave home without his signature look which was his CAT hat and flannel shirt.
He was predeceased by his parents, as well as his precious daughter Amanda.
George will be forever remembered by his family. He was married to the love of his life Sharon (Nelson) Somero for 59 years. Together they had twelve children. Michael of New Ipswich, NH, Glen (Lynette) of New Ipswich, NH, Jon (Camie) of New Ipswich, NH, Jess (Candi) of Lake Worth FL, Amy (Darin) Warnke of Hockinson, WA, Beth of Leominster, MA, Nick (Heidi) of New Ipswich, NH, Amanda (Jamie) Mims of New Ipswich, NH, Donna (Carl) Wirkkala of Castle Rock, WA, Sara (Greg) Lang of Battle Ground, WA, Holly (Juan) Valle of Guatemala, and Ben (Eliisa) of New Ipswich, NH. 45 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Billy has two brothers Gary (Kay) Somero of New Ipswich and Carl Somero of Lady Lake, FL, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
