John Byron Hazleton

November 28, 1923 — July 1, 2009

JOHN B. HAZLETON, 85, of Hastings Avenue, Keene, died Wednesday July 1, 2009 at the Cheshire Medical Center in Keene as a result of complications from a fall at his home on June 17th.

He was born November 28, 1923 in Brockton, MA, son of the late John L. and Bessie (Harrison) Hazleton.
He was a 1941 graduate of Brockton High School.

Mr. Hazleton enlisted in the United States Army on Feb 4, 1943 and retired on January 1, 1967, with the rank of Command Sergeant Major. During World War II, Mr. Hazleton served in combat during the Battle of the Bulge, as part of the 87th Infantry Divisions 912th Field Artillery Battalion. His Army service extended through the Korean Conflict and into the Vietnam Era, and he was awarded the Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster. Mr. Hazleton was a member of the 87th Infantry Division Association, as well as Jaffrey Memorial Post #5613 VFW, and the John Humiston American Legion Post #11 of Jaffrey.
Following his retirement from the Army, he was employed for twenty two years at Franklin Pierce College in Rindge, retiring in 1988 as Director of Auxiliary Services.
Mr. Hazleton was a former member of the United Church of Jaffrey. He was a 50-year member of Charity Lodge #18 AFAM of Jaffrey. He was also an active member of Eastern Star Signet Chapter #15 where he was Worthy Patron for several years.

Survivors include his wife of sixteen years, Donna (Smith) Hazleton of Keene; his son, John Jack Hazleton, Jr. of Ashuelot, NH; four daughters, June D. Hazleton of Sebastopol, California, Sandra H. Leach of Sausalito, California, Patricia H. Bennett of Bayview, Idaho, Gail H. Nelson of Pembroke, NH; and a step-son, Robert Trader of Spofford, NH; six grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents he was pre-deceased by his brother Walter Hazleton in 1965 and his sister Myrtle Hazleton in 1999.

Flowers are welcomed, or memorial contributions may be made to Charity Lodge #18, Post Office Box 693,Jaffrey, NH 03452, to the Salvation Army, 15 Roxbury Plaza, Keene, NH 03431, or to the charity of ones choice.

Burial, with full military honors, will follow in Conant Cemetery, Stratton Road, Jaffrey.

Friends and family are warmly invited to call at the Cournoyer Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 33 River Street (Route 202 south) in Jaffrey on Monday from 5:00 to 7:00 PM.
A Masonic Service will be held at 6:30PM.

Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday at 11:00 AM. Rev. David Forry of Jaffrey will officiate.
