John D. Pratt, 81, of Valley Road in Dublin died Saturday, March 1, 2008 at the Monadnock Community Hospital in Peterborough after a period of failing health.
Mr. Pratt was born in Keene, NH on February 16, 1927, son of the late Ernest J. and Frances (Smith) Pratt. He was a 1945 graduate of Conant High School in Jaffrey and enjoyed their yearly class reunions.
He served with the U.S. Marine Corps from 1945 to 1946 with the Military Police in the Caribbean during World War II. Mr. Pratt was a long-time member of the Cheney-Armstrong American Legion Post #5 in Peterborough.
Mr. Pratt had owned and operated Peterborough Shoe Repair in downtown Peterborough for several years. He then became one of the earliest employees at New Hampshire Ball Bearing where he worked as a machinist for over 30 years before retiring in 1989.
He was an avid reader and enjoyed spending time at the Dublin Town Library and reading all about History. Mr. Pratt loved a good game of cribbage and could often be found playing with the other members of the Senior Focus Group. Mr. Pratt also enjoyed baseball and is fondly remembered by many in the area as being a wonderful coach. He was a member of the Dublin Community Church and was a Sunday School teacher.
Mr. Pratt was preceded in death by his brothers Philip, Robert and David.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Elsie (Wilson) Pratt of Dublin, whom he married on August 29, 1948; his 2 daughters, Martha J. Steele of Fox Point, Wisconsin and Nancy E. Pratt of Keene, NH; his 2 sons, Daniel W. Pratt and his wife Catherine of Colchester, CT and Kenneth J. Pratt of Portsmouth, NH; 4 Grandsons, Justin, Brendan and Jared Pratt, all of Colchester, CT and Curtis Steele of Fox Point, Wisconsin and many nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Pratts name to the Dublin Public Library, Main Street; Box 442, Dublin, NH 03444-0442, or to Breathe New Hampshire, 9 Cedarwood Drive, Unit 12,Bedford, NH 03110, or to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, 15 Green Street, Concord, NH 03301
Burial will take place in the spring in the family lot at Dublin Cemetery.
At Mr. Pratts request, there will be no calling hours.
An announcement will be made in the spring when a Memorial Service will be held at the Dublin Community Church.
