CHARLES D. SMITH, JR., 83, of Pheasant Road, Peterborough, died peacefully December 26, 2008 at Harborside Healthcare (Pheasantwood) after a long period of failing health.

He was born on January 21, 1925, in Clinton, MA, son of the late Charles and Ruth (Casey) Smith Sr. He attended schools in Massachusetts.

Mr. Smith was a very patriotic person. He joined the United States Navy during World War II and served his country with honor. He attained the rank of Seaman Second Class before being honorably discharged in January of 1945.

Mr. Smith worked as a weaver at numerous textile mills throughout New England. As a result, he and his family had made their home in numerous areas, but they lived the longest in Jaffrey, Peterborough, Antrim, and Nashua, NH, and Shirley, MA. Eventually, Mr. Smith decided to retire from the mills and stayed at home to raise his children. From his home, he taught Pedal Steel Guitar to many students through the years.

Mr. Smith was a Ford Mustang fanatic and also an avid golfer. He was a member at the Woodbound for over 10 years and had scored 6 holes-in-1 there, as well as 6 more at other area golf courses.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Beulah (French) Smith, of Temple, NH; his twin daughters, Mary Wakeman of Jaffrey, NH and Melinda Powers of Peterborough, NH; his two sons, Michael Smith of Temple, NH and David Smith of California; his four grandchildren, Dylan Powers of Peterborough, NH, Natasha Elms of Glens Falls, NY, Bobby Harvel and Brian Wakeman, both of Jaffrey, NH; his two brothers, James Smith of Laconia, NH and Raymond Smith of Maynard, MA and many nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends. Mr. Smiths sister, Helen, died earlier.

In lieu of flowers, family and friends are encouraged to make memorial contributions in Mr. Smiths name to the NH Veterans Cemetery Association, P.O. Box 626, Concord, NH 03302-0626, or to the Disabled American Veterans Memorial Program, P.O. Box 14301, Cincinnati, OH 45250-0301.

Burial will be at the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen.

Family and friends are warmly invited to attend calling hours on Tuesday, December 30, 2008 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 Noon at the Cournoyer Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 33 River Street (Route 202 South) in Jaffrey.

Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, December 20, 2008 at 12:00 Noon, immediately following calling hours, in the funeral home chapel. Rev. Daniel Osgood will officiate at the service.
