Linda Stickney Mathewson, adored wife, mother, and grandmother,passed away at her home in Hancock surrounded by the love and tender care of her family on September 9th, 2009.
She died from complications of kidney disease and blood disease.
Born October 16th 1940 in Montpelier, Vermont, to Edgar and Mildred (Richardson) Stickney, Linda received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from the University of Vermont in 1962, and married Owen 'Dan' Danforth Mathewson the same year. She and her husband moved to Hancock , New Hampshire, and together established the first pediatric practice at Peterboroughs Monadnock Community Hospital in 1971.
Linda will be most remembered for her tireless and loving devotion to her family. She and Dan transformed their home into a busy and thriving dairy farm with 45 registered guernseys, followed by a sheep farm of 150 ewes. Horses, chickens, pigs, dogs and cats, also found a home at their Brooks Side Farm. Always with a quick wit and open heart, Linda raised six children and seven grandchildren, never missed a game or school play and was very active in 4-H.
She loved to cook and mastered recipes, such as her award winning baked beans, which became famed favorites among family and friends alike. She also loved to travel and was very fond of being by the sea. Warm and giving, it was with her family by her side that Linda was happiest as a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend.
Linda leaves behind her husband of 47 years, 'Dan' Mathewson of Hancock, NH; her three daughters, Sue Rugg of Antrim, NH, Meigra Ramos of Bedford, NH, and Sarah Mathewson of Dallas, TX; her three sons, Philip and Ozias Mathewson, both of Hancock, NH, and Mark Mathewson of New York City, NY; her seven grandchildren, Nina, Ally, and Maddie (of Sue), Anthony and Nicholas (of Meg), Hunter (of Philip), and Haley (of Ozias); her sister, Carol Burdett of Shelburne, VT, her brother, John Stickney of Greensboro Bend, VT; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Lindas name for patient care needs in the Oncology/Hematology Department at the Monadnock Community Hospital, 452 Old Street Road, Peterborough, NH 03458, or to Hospice at HCS, PO Box 496, Peterborough, NH 03458.
Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.
At Lindas request, there will be no calling hours.
A Memorial Service and celebration of Lindas life will take place at the First Congregational Church, UCC, 47 Main Street, Hancock, NH on Wednesday, September 16, 2009, at 10:00 AM. Rev. CarolynH. Keilig, Pastor, will officiate.
