Lloyd R. Soderberg, 82, a longtime resident of Jaffrey, NH, died peacefully on Monday, June 27, 2016 at the VNA Hospice House in Concord, NH after a period of failing health.
Lloyd was born in Caribou, Maine on October 29, 1933, son of the late John A. and Grace (Anderson) Soderberg. He was a 1954 graduate of Fort Kent State Normal School in Maine and attended Aroostock State Teachers College in Presque Isle before serving his country honorably in the U.S. Army. After the completion of his service, Lloyd finished his Bachelors Degree in 1962 he earned his Masters Degree from the University of Maine, in Orono.
Lloyd began his career teaching elementary aged children before becoming a teaching principal in Thomaston Maine. He subsequently served as teacher or as principal in elementary and middle schools the midcoast Maine area. He was principal for the Surry, Gilsum and Sullivan Schools. Eventually Lloyd became the principal at the Wilton, NH Elementary School until his retirement from education. He then earned his realtor's license, working in the Jaffrey and Rindge.
Through the years, Lloyd was active in athletics, having played basketball through college and serving as a referee and beyond for many years. He coached basketball and track and had also been the Recreation Director in Union, Maine. Lloyd was active in Boy Scouting, having served as an Assistant Scoutmaster in New Sweden, Maine and organizing the Cub Scout Pack in Surry. For over 20 years, he was the liaison between the Jaffrey Lions Club and the Cub Scout Pack in Jaffrey.
Lloyd had been very active in his communities with the local Lions Clubs. He had belonged to the Keene and Jaffrey Clubs, as well as having served as a director and past-president of the Jaffrey Club. Over his more than 35 year membership, Lloyd earned several International recognitions and was installed as a Melvin Jones Fellow.
Lloyd was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Keene where he served most recently on the Trustees and on both the first and the most recent Paul Revere Bell committees.
Lloyd was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly (Magill) Soderberg on April 11, 2013, and by his youngest son, Jeffrey J. Soderberg on August 14, 2011.
He is survived by his daughter, Debra Anderson of Vancouver, British Columbia; his son, Bruce Soderberg of Knoxville, Tennessee; his grandchildren, Mary Margaret, Kate, Evan, and Carlene; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Lloyd’s name to the First Baptist Church, 105 Maple Avenue in Keene, NH or to the Jaffrey – Rindge Lions Club 79 Hadley Rd, Jaffrey, NH 03452
Family and friends are invited to a Funeral Service which will take place at the First Baptist Church, 105 Maple Avenue in Keene, NH on Saturday, July 2, 2016 at 10:00 AM.
Graveside services with Military Honors will take place in Cutter Cemetery, on Harkness Road in Jaffrey at 12:30 PM. Rev. Mark Ferrin, Pastor of the First Baptist Church in Keene will officiate the services.
