Margaret Crawford

Margaret “Maggie” Elizabeth Crawford, 97, died Friday February 8, 2013 at the Presidential Oaks in Concord, NH. She was born December 3, 1915 in Franklin, NH, daughter of the late Ralph E. and Sadie (Sanborn) Wells. Her formative years were spent in Contoocook where she attended Contoocook schools. She has been a resident of Presidential Oaks for the past twenty years. She had also lived in Warner, Contoocook, several towns in Massachusetts, as well as Jaffrey and Rindge before moving to Concord. Margaret worked several years at Sylvania in Hillsboro NH; she had also worked at Transitron in Wakefield MA and at the Peterborough Basket Shop in Peterborough NH. At the time of her retirement she was working at Millipore Corporation in Jaffrey. Margaret loved the outdoors, bird watching, gardening, playing cards, making puzzles, playing bingo and helping people. For many years at Presidential Oaks she tended to her gardens on the property and was known for her lovely flowers, especially her roses. She loved cats and was known for making doughnuts in the wee hours of the morning. Margaret did volunteer work at Presidential Oaks, up until her health wouldn’t let her. She was a communicant of St. Patrick Church in Jaffrey. In 1935 Margaret married Oliver Johnson; that marriage dissolved in 1958. She married John P. Best Sr. in 1960. John predeceased her in 1976. She then married Ralph Crawford and he died in 1989. She is survived by her daughter Olive D. Ryan of Contoocook; her son Clinton L. Johnson of Clarksville, NH; her daughter-in-law Elizabeth Crawford of Contoocook; a step grandson Dennis Crawford and his wife Lynda of Warner; two step granddaughters Carol Crawford of Belmont and Brenda Martin and her husband John of Concord; two step-great grandsons Kendrick R. Crawford of Warner and Alden C. Martin of Concord. In addition to her parents and husbands, she was also predeceased by her sister, two half-sisters, six-half brothers and her son-in-law Arnold Crawford.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Presidential Oaks, 200 Pleasant Street, Concord NH 03301 or to Concord VNA Hospice Program, 240 Pleasant Street, Concord NH 03301, or to the Monadnock Humane Society, 101 West Swanzey Road, Swanzey NH 03446.

Family and friends are warmly invited to a calling hour Thursday February 14 from 10:00 to 11:00AM at the Cournoyer Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 33 River Street, (Route 202S) in Jaffrey.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Thursday, February 14, 2013 in St. Patrick Church, 89 Main Street, Jaffrey. Rev Wilfred H. Deschamps, Pastor will officiate. Spring burial will be in St. Patrick Cemetery in Jaffrey.
