Merton S. Dyer

MERTON S. DYER, 78, of Lobacki Drive in Peterborough died Tuesday, March 11, 2008 at his home after a brief illness.
 
He was born in Amherst, NH on February 16, 1930, son of the late Raymond and Florence (Snodgrass) Dyer. 
 
Mr. Dyer was a 1948 graduate of Milford (NH) High School in Milford, NH.  He then attended the Massachusetts School of Pharmacy where he earned his Bachelors Degree in Pharmacology in 1952 and his Masters Degree in 1954.  He was also a Doctorial Candidate in Philosophy.
 
Mr. Dyer entered the United States Army and served his country from 1954 to 1956 with the Rocky Mountain Arsenal in Denver, Colorado. 
 
After serving in the military, he returned home and moved to Peterborough where he opened Dyer Drugs on Grove Street in 1956.  Later, the pharmacy ultimately moved to the Peterborough Plaza.  Mr. Dyer also opened a second drug store in New Ipswich and was part owner of one in Milford as well.  He was a Registered Pharmacist here in New Hampshire for over 55 years.   
 
Mr. Dyer was a long-time member and historian of the Peterborough Fire Department.  He served as Peterboroughs Fire Chief from 1965 to 1977 and was a past president of the New England Association of Fire Chiefs.  Mr. Dyer was a Peterborough Selectman from 1984 to 1993 and had also served in the House of Representatives for the town of Peterborough for many years.  Mr. Dyer was an active member in the Peterborough Rotary Club and had also been the clubs secretary.  He was still actively serving on New Hampshires Board of Dieticians in Concord.
 
Mr. Dyer was predeceased by his son Thomas R. Dyer.
He is survived by his 2 sons, Stephen Dyer of Phoenix, AZ and Kenneth Dyer of Medford, Mass.; his brother William L. Dyer of Milford, NH, and many grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.

Memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Dyers name to the Peterborough Fire & Rescue Associations Aquarius Museum, or to the Peterborough Fire & Rescue Associations Sunshine Fund, 16 Summer Street, Peterborough, NH 03458.

Burial will take place in the spring at Saint Peter Cemetery in Peterborough.

At Mr Dyers request, there will be no calling hours and services will be private.
