Mildred A. Oyler, 93, formerly of New Ipswich, NH, died peacefully in St. Augustine, FL on January 21, 2013 with her daughter Deborah by her side. She was born in Roanoke, VA on Dec. 10, 1919, daughter of the late W. Earl and Ida (Groves) Allen. Millie, a Virginia lady, served as a civilian with the U.S. Army Signal Corps during World War II, and was the first civilian to be transferred with an army unit when they were ordered to Seattle, WA where they assisted in breaking the Japanese naval operations code. While with her unit in Seattle, she met the love of her life, Carl E. Oyler, Jr. of Gettysburg, PA. They were married in 1943, and shortly after he was ordered to combat in the Philippines. Together in Falls Church, VA, they raised four children: Marsha Griffin of Jaffrey, NH, Cynthia Oyler (deceased), Jeffrey A. Oyler of Chesapeake, VA, and Deborah Tanner of St. Augustine, FL. Millie and Carl moved to New Ipswich in 1980 to spend their retirement years and enjoy their grandchildren. After Carl’s passing in 1983, Millie found enjoyment in a number of community endeavors including as deacon of the Temple Congregational Church and Chairman of the local Habitat for Humanity. She relocated to St. Augustine FL in 1994 where she enjoyed walking the beaches and basked in the love of her family as the matriarch. She is survived by 8 grandchildren, Angela Kostelansky of PA, Joelle Ford of Brookline NH, Jessica Fauteux of Brookline, NH, Cara Khym of Queens, NY, Brittany Oyler, Christine Oyler, both of Chesapeake VA, Jodi and Jeremy Tanner of St. Augustine, FL, and 15 great-grandchildren. Millie will always be remembered as a generous, gregarious and energetic lady who loved her family above all else. A recent visit by her newest (at the time) great-granddaughter (9 mos.), brought a renewed twinkle to her tired eyes and joy to her soul as she enjoyed soft baby kisses, once again exhibiting the greatest treasure of her life, her family.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Millie’s memory can be made to Moultrie Creek Nursing Center, 200 Mariner Health Way, St. Augustine, FL 32086, to a local Hospice, or to a charity of choice.
A local celebration of Millie's life is planned for the spring.
