Peterborough MILDRED C. RAINIER, 95 of Elm Hill Road, Peterborough died Sunday August 19, 2007 at the Good Shepherd Health Care in Jaffrey.
She was born December 24, 1911 in Bridgeport CT, daughter of the late William and Florence (Temporal) Coles. She was graduated from Westfield (NJ) High School and from Pace College in New York City. She then worked in New York, NY for six years. 'œMillie' moved to New Hampshire with her family in 1946. She worked the authors Hayden Pearson and George Morrison, typing their manuscripts for publication. For several years she worked for Kenneth Brighton. She was the administrative secretary for Peterborough High School and then ConVal High School for more than twenty years. She was also the secretary for the New England Cultural Organization at Conval High School. She also coached cheerleading at ConVal. Millie was president of the New Hampshire Educational Secretary Association for two years.
She was an active member of Union Congregational Church in Peterborough, teaching Sunday School and was active with Women'™s Fellowship and the Tuesday Night Circle. Millie served as a Girl Scout leader and was a Den Mother with the Cub Scouts. After her retirement, Millie and her husband enjoyed spending summers at their home in Nova Scotia. Millie loved to knit, read and do crossword puzzles. But most of all she cherished time spent with family and friends. She touched many people with her thoughtfulness and sense of humor.
Her husband of fifty years, Frank Wescott Rainier died in 1989.
Survivors include two daughters Judith R. Garabrant of Peterborough and Susan J. Rainier of Henniker; a son George P. Rainier of Greenfield; seven grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; a sister Marjorie Fergerson of El Paso, TX; a brother Edward Coles of Rutland VT; nieces and nephews. There will be no calling hours. Funeral services will be held Friday August 24, 2007 at 11:00AM in the Union Congregational Church, Concord Street, Peterborough. Rev. Polly Shamy, pastor will officiate. Burial will follow in Pine Hill Cemetery, Peterborough. The family has requested that memorial contributions be made to either the Monadnock Humane Society, Post Office Box 678, West Swanzey NH 03469 or to the Peterborough Fire and Rescue, in care of Chief Joseph Lennox, 16 Summer Street, Peterborough NH 03458 or to the Activities Fund at Good Shepherd Health Care, 20 Plantation Drive, Jaffrey NH 03452.
