Phyllis Meyers, 97, died peacefully at Rivermead Assisted Living on Saturday, July 10th, 2021, with her family and a close friend present.
She was born in Hartford, Connecticut on March 25th, 1924 to Harry and Rose (Weiner) Schindel. Phyllis graduated from Syracuse University with a degree in Early Childhood Education. She cofounded a preschool at Vassar College, and later opened her own preschool with a special aptitude for working with children with disabilities and championing inclusion.
She and her husband Richard loved to travel and had some great adventures, visiting many countries, often with lifelong friends. They lived in Belgium in the 1970’s due to Richard’s work. While there, Phyllis volunteered at a home for severely disabled and autistic children. Even after retirement age, she volunteered in the pediatric ward at Vassar Hospital.
Phyllis was always curious about the world and always up for a spirited conversation about world events. She was an avid reader, loved gardening and nature, and appreciated the arts. Throughout her life, knitting, embroidery, quilting, and baking were expressions of her creativity. She encouraged crafts and the arts in her children.
Her family and many friends have felt the warmth of her caring listening and attention. She was always interested in how you were doing and what you were up to. She will be greatly missed.
Phyllis was predeceased by her beloved husband of seventy years, Richard Kayton Meyers. She is survived by her daughters, Nancy and Janet Meyers of Santa Fe, New Mexico, and by her son Thomas, daughter-in-law Mary, and grandson Rafael of Hancock, New Hampshire.
