Phyllis Sawyer Walkonen Shippee Lawn

PHYLLIS SAWYER WALKONEN SHIPPEE LAWN, 88 of Kevin Lane Jaffrey, died peacefully Thursday August 23, 2007 at the home of her daughter in Fitzwilliam.

She was born November 11, 1918 in Jaffrey, daughter of the late Roscoe and Rita (Parsons) Sawyer, the third of five children. She was a 1936 graduate of Conant High School in Jaffrey and also graduated in 1938 from the former Bay Path Institute in Springfield MA.,where she studied Secretarial Sciences. Phyllis had been a resident of West Dover VT for thirty-eight years returning to Jaffrey in 1996.

During her years in Vermont she had served the Town of Dover in many capacities including Selectman for seven years, Town auditor, Town agent, member of the Planning Commission, member of the Board of Appeals, grand juror and Justice of the Peace. She was a member of the West Dover Congregational Church. Upon her return to Jaffrey she became an active member of the United Church of Jaffrey as well as the Triple D of the United Church, the Jaffrey Woman'™s Club, the Jaffrey Historical Society, and the Jaffrey Chamber of Commerce.

She is survived by her husband James Lawn of Jaffrey whom she married in 2002; a daughter Lucy Walkonen Humphrey and her husband Stephen of Fitzwilliam; three sons Matthew Walkonen of Wardsboro VT, Stuart Shippee of Carmel, NY and Roscoe Shippee of West Dover, VT; three stepsons Fredric Walkonen of Fitzwilliam, Robert Lawn of Palmyra Maine and Greg Lawn of Peterborough; a step daughter Alta Lawn of Plymouth, Maine; 7 grandsons; many step grandchildren, great-step grandchildren, great great step grandchildren; 12 nieces and nephews. She was married to Kauko Walkonen in 1946, and then to William Shippee in 1958, he died in 1993. She is predeceased by two sisters Marie Clark LeCuyer and Nancy Moore; two brothers Alfred Sawyer and David Sawyer; also a step daughter Toini Walkonen Parker.

There will be no calling hours. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday September 15 at 2:00PM at the United Church of Jaffrey, 54 Main Street, Jaffrey. A reception hosted by the Triple D will follow in the Parish Hall. On Sunday August 16 at 2:00PM family and friends are invited to a gathering to celebrate Phyllis'™s life at the Town Hall in Dover VT. Interment will be in the family plot in Mountain View Cemetery, Dover VT.
