Richard A. Butler

Richard Alfred Butler, 84, of Jaffrey, passed away peacefully in Jaffrey Rehabilitation and Nursing Center on Thursday, June 30, 2022.

Richard was born on August 25, 1937, in Peterborough, NH, a son of the late Carl A. and Sarah F. (MacMaster) Butler.

Richard was a longtime resident of Jaffrey, having attended local schools and graduated from Conant High School class of 1955.

Richard joined and proudly served in the Army National Guard in September of 1954. He went on to enlist in the United States Air Force, serving from 1956 until 1961 up until he was honorably discharged. Following his service in the military, he worked for various airlines as a customer service representative and as an aircraft dispatcher. He worked for over 10 years in the FAA as an air traffic controller. Richard also spent 18 years working as a rural mail carrier in Jaffrey until his retirement in 2002.

In his free time, Richard was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was known for his love of traveling, especially to Alaska and Brazil for fishing. He was active in the Monadnock Rod and Gun Club in Peterborough, the American Legion of Jaffrey, and the Eastern Massachusetts Beagle Club of Ashburnham. He was very generous and loved spending his free time driving veterans to the VA hospitals for their appointments. Richard especially loved spending time with his family and friends.

Richard was predeceased by both of his parents, and by his brother, Robert Butler of Claremont, NH.

He will be lovingly remembered by his daughter, Wendy and her husband Stephen Schlim of Milford, NH, his son, Timothy Butler of Orlando, FL., his two brothers; Ronald and his wife Birgit Butler of Hillsboro, NH, and Russ Butler and his life partner Liz Tong of Jaffrey, NH., and Kay Butler of Jaffrey, NH. and Elizabeth Butler of Alaska, Two grandchildren; Isabella Schlim and Ben Schlim, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends.

There will be no calling hours. A graveside service with Military Honors will take place on Saturday, July 9, 2022, at 11:00 AM in St. Patrick Cemetery on Hillcrest Road in Jaffrey, NH.

Memorial contributions may be made in Richard’s name to The Eastern Massachusetts Beagle Club, 161 Ferrin Road, Ashburnham, MA 01430, or the Monadnock Rod and Gun Club, 595 Jaffrey Road, Peterborough, NH 03458, or to the American Legion, 20 Webster Street, Jaffrey NH, 03452.
