Robert Culhane died suddenly on September 20, 2015 at the age of 83. He grew up in
Rochester NY and received a Master’s degree in Education from Syracuse University. He
served two years in the US Army stationed in Germany.
Bob taught mathematics and science for the 8th through 12th grades in Rochester NY, San
Francisco CA, and Somerville MA, before opening the “Country Lights” bookstore in
Hillsborough NH and later Keene NH. He went on to teach for 22 years at Mascenic High
School in New lpswich NH, where he started a “Home Base" program to help students graduate.
He cared greatly about all his students and helped each to move individually through the
learning process.
Bob had a lifelong love of books and old movies and enjoyed 42 years as a resident of New
Ipswich. On the afternoon before his death he gathered a number of his friends together at his
home to watch the 1956 film adaptation of "Moby Dick”.
He leaves a wife Carol and two daughters Alys of Palmer, AK and Eleanor of Portland, OR.
A private gathering of friends to celebrate his life will be scheduled at a later date.
