Ruth Agnes (Cheney) Crocker
1925 – 2015, in her 90th year
Ruth passed away in her home on Jewell Hill Farm on March 3, 2015 with her family by her side. She had lived on the farm for over 60 years with her beloved husband Ken who predeceased her in 1991.
Born May 10, 1925 in New Ipswich, NH, the daughter of Louis and Lydia (Erickson) Cheney, she moved to Ashby at a young age where she lived for the rest of her life.
Ruth had many stories of her childhood and would honestly say her had the best childhood and young adult life imaginable. She graduated from Ashby High School where she took an aeronautics class to meet a math requirement and got to go up in a small plane. It was the only time she flew!
Ruth worked at the Ashby Tavern, an insurance company, and on the Ration Board during the war. She met Ken during this time and they married in 1947. She moved to Jewell Hill Farm where she truly embraced being a dairy farmer’s wife, and all it included: keeping the books, running errands, making sure the hay makers were supplied with her switchel (iced tea, ginger ale, and orange juice), raising two boys, and all the various pets and other animals that came along.
Ruth and Ken shared many interests, including square dancing, snowmobiling, going to plays, and, in later life, after they had retired from active farming, traveling around the country on bus, train, and river trips.
Ruth made the adjustment to being a widow with grace and fortitude. She continued to have adventures with trips to see polar bears, beaching in Maine, and a train trip to Florida with her grandson to stay with Gus and Linda. She dedicated many years to caring for her mother in her later years.
Her twinkling blue eyes, and her kindness and curiosity, will be remembered fondly by her family and friends. She was a true treasure to her family and will be in our hearts forever.
Ruth leaves her two sons Kendall (Gus) and his wife Linda of Rindge, NH, Alfred and his wife Stephanie of Ashby, grandchildren ,Travis, Kelly and Brenda, and great-grands Ben and Emily, as well as many nieces and nephews. Her sister, Phyllis Gravell, predeceased her.
Many thanks to her devoted care givers in her final months.
A celebration of her life will be held in the spring.
