Sylvester "Jim" O'Toole

January 15, 1935 — July 20, 2015

Sylvester (Jim) O’Toole, 80, died peacefully at his home on Monday, July 20th with his wife by his side. He was married to Deborah A. (Rock) O’Toole; they had recently celebrated their 34th wedding anniversary in May.

Jim was born on January 15, 1935 in Lowell, MA, son of the late Sylvester and Frances (Riley) O’Toole. Jim grew up in Billerica, MA, graduated from Keith Academy and attended Merrimack College.

He entered the Navy in Brunswick, Maine in 1954 and served as a hospital corpsman 2nd class on the aircraft carrier, The USS Tarawa. Upon honorable discharge from the Navy, Jim began a career with the United States Postal Service in Lawrence, MA. Following his retirement from the Postal Service he worked part time for Market Basket and enjoyed it greatly.

Jim was very fond of reading the newspaper, watching TV sports and movies, growing flowers, bird watching and walking his beloved dog. He loved living in his log cabin and spending time at home. He especially loved having intense conversations, discussing the news of the day.
Locally, Syl was a 3rd degree member and life member of Our Lady of Monadnock Knights of Columbus Council # 8544 and a communicant of Saint Patrick Church in Jaffrey. He belonged to the Jaffrey Memorial Post #5613 VFW. Jim was a friend of Bill W’s for over 35 years.

Jim was predeceased by his parents and his sister, Patricia Nugent.

In addition to his wife, Jim is survived by his son Mathew S. O’Toole and his wife Lauren Finn O’Toole of New York City and his daughter Mariah F. O’Toole of Savannah, GA; his two sisters, Mary and her husband Richard Forsyth of Tewksbury, MA, and Adeline Murphy of Lowell, MA; one brother, Edward O’Toole and his wife Chrissy of Tewksbury, MA; his sister-in-law, Alana (Rock) Brassard and her husband Richard of Tyngsboro, MA, and his two brother-in-laws, Robert Rock and his wife Mary Ellen Davies of New Boston, NH and Charles Nugent of Maine, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Family and friends are warmly invited to calling hours, which will be held on Friday, July 24, 2015 from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM in the Cournoyer Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 33 River Street, Jaffrey, NH.

Immediately following calling hours a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2:00 PM in St. Patrick Church, 89 Main Street, Jaffrey, NH. Rev. Wilfred Deschamps, Pastor, will be the celebrant. Full Military Honors will be rendered for Mr. O’Toole after the Mass.

Memorial contributions may be made in Jim’s name to either the Monastery of St. Clare, 445 River Road, Andover, MA 01810, or to the Knights of Columbus #8544, PO Box 492, Jaffrey, NH 03452.
