Thomas P. Owen, 83, of Rindge, died on his 63rd wedding anniversary, Tuesday, June 10, 2014 at the Monadnock Community Hospital in Peterborough after a period of failing health.
He was born on March 7, 1931 in Quincy, MA, son of the late John and Annie (Ellis) Owen. He was raised in Quincy until moving to Rockland, MA in 1949 and graduated from Rockland High School in 1950. On June 10, 1951, Mr. Owen married his high school sweetheart, Joan B. Haskell.
Mr. Owen had worked for over 35 years at A&P Supermarkets in various store locations including Rockland, Whitman, Wareham and Hanover, and in different capacities, mainly as a Store Manager or Assistant Manager. Most recently, he worked for Angelo’s Supermarkets for just over 10 years, retiring in 1993.
Mr. Owen proudly enjoyed time spent with his children and grandchildren, whether it was watching them play sports, taking them fishing or other family activities. He would often bring his grandchildren along to work with him at one of his part-time jobs. Mr. Owen also enjoyed tending his vegetable gardens and simply loved being outside.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Owen was predeceased by his son Andrew W. Owen, his brother John W. Owen, Jr. and by his sister Elizabeth Perkins.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Joan (Haskell) Owen of Rindge, NH; his daughter Carolyn and her husband Joseph Reardon of Sandwich, MA; his son Kenneth S. Owen and his wife Mary of Whitman, MA; his son Steven A. Owen and his wife Jane of Dunbarton, NH; his son Wayne T. Owen and his wife Donna of Duxbury, MA; his daughter-in-law Sandra Owen of Nantucket, MA; 13 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Mr. Owen’s family will gather privately for a time of viewing before the services on Saturday.
Family and friends are invited to a public memorial service which will be held on Saturday, June 14, 2014 at 11:00 AM in the Trinity Evangelical Church, 700 Dublin Road, (Rte. 101), West Peterborough, NH 03458. Rev. John Engle will officiate.
Following cremation, burial will be at the convenience of the family at Hillside Cemetery in Rindge, NH.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Owen’s name to where Joan worked for several years, Victory High School, an alternative educational experience, 7 Knight Street, Jaffrey, NH 03452.
