Yangja Jung Legg

Yangja Jung Legg, 65, of Mountain Road in Jaffrey, died as a result of injuries she received in an automobile accident on Sunday, July 29, 2007. She had previously lived in Needham and Dover, Massachusetts for many years before retiring and living in Jaffrey, New Hampshire since 1991.

Yangja was born on Sarangdo Island in South Korea on January 12, 1942; she was the daughter of Jaeyong and Chundo (Kim) Jung. She graduated from medical school in Korea and then moved to the United States to serve her residency. Yangja first moved to Madison, Wisconsin and later to Boston where she enjoyed working with and eventually marrying Dr. Merle A. Legg. Yangja had served as the Chief of Surgical Pathology at the Boston University Medical School before eventually retiring from the Veterans Administration Hospital in Jamaica Plain. Yangja and her husband had worked together in establishing a sister relationship between New England Deaconess Hospital and Xian Medical University in China, and had led many multidisciplinary teams to China for several years prior to their moving to Jaffrey.

Yangja was an avid gardener. Wherever she lived, she and Merle created beautiful oriental gardens. She was especially fond of rhododendrons, unusual conifers and tree peonies. She would share her talents as a frequent exhibitor at the annual 'œArt in Bloom' show at the Museum of Fine Art in Boston each spring.

Yangja was very active at the First Church in Jaffrey and particularly enjoyed singing in the church choir as well as in the Monadnock Chorus and Chorale groups with whom she enjoyed traveling with also. Yangja was also an admirer of fine art and had been a long time volunteer with the Boston Museum of Fine Arts Ladies Committee. Until last year, Yangja had hosted many trips to the Museum and had also brought several lecturers from the museum to Jaffrey. She was an avid reader and had donated countless books to the Jaffrey Civic Center and helped transform the library there into what it is today.

Yangja'™s husband, Dr. Merle A. Legg, preceded her in death on March 3, 2006. She is survived by her two step-daughters, Marianne (Betsy) Legg of Edmonds, Washington and Marti L. Christophe of Fair Haven, New Jersey; three step-sons, James F. Legg of Wrentham, Massachusetts, Walter A. Legg of King George, Virginia and Stephen D. Legg of Denver, Colorado; her sisters, Inja Im of Pusan, Korea, Insook Park of Seoul, Korea and Youngsun Jung of Brookline, MA; her brothers, Youngchun Jung of Pusan, Korea and Moonsung Jung of Seoul, Korea, and six step-grandchildren.
